The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently announced on its website that it would be impractical to pursue Office of Management and Budget clearance for the Medicare Medical Home Demonstration due to pending legislation.
Specifically, CMS reports that H.R.3200 contains a provision to repeal the Medicare Medical Home Demonstration and replace it with an independent practitioner-based medical home pilot. CMS also points out that the House bill includes a second medical home pilot to evaluate community-based medical home models.
However, CMS intends to move forward with a demonstration announced by Secretary Sebelius on September 16, 2009 in which Medicare would partner with existing multi-payer medical home pilots. According to CMS, this demonstration will be known as the Multi-Payer Advanced Primary Care Practice Demonstration. CMS expects to implement this demonstration in 2010.
